Conflicts, disasters, climate change, and health emergencies are causing unprecedented levels of humanitarian need around the world. Women and girls are uniquely impacted – on top of violence, displacement, and the loss of livelihoods and social safety nets, they often face disruptions in their access to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services and a heightened risk of gender-based violence (GBV). Humanitarian actors often do not view SRH and GBV as life-threatening issues and consequently do not prioritize them in aid programs, leaving millions of women and girls without vital services and undermining their human rights.

In the two years since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, which protected the constitutional right to abortion, Americans have dealt with a sexual and reproductive health landscape that is a complex puzzle, featuring fractured sex education, gender-affirming care, and family planning and abortion services. In the report card’s twelve-year history, the U.S. overall grade has dropped from a C- to an F, and the number of failing states has skyrocketed—from nine in 2012 to 25 this year.

On June 24, 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court upended nearly 50 years of precedent that ended the constitutional right to an abortion. Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization overturned Roe v. Wade. With the overturning of Roe, the U.S. centers itself among countries that are de-prioritizing gender equity, increasing stigmatization and criminalization of healthcare, and preventing the realization of bodily autonomy.


Reproductive Health and Rights: A Tale of Two Americas

rePROs Fight Back has released the 50-state report card on reproductive health and rights. This year with the U.S. Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade, which protected the right to abortion, it is more apparent than ever that there is a tale of two Americas: one in which people can exercise their reproductive rights, and another in which they cannot. In the eleven years of the report card, the U.S. overall grade has dropped from a C- to an F, and the number of failing states has grown dramatically - from nine the first year to 26 this year.
