Firstly, you can follow SIECUS: Sex Ed For Social Change on Twitter and Facebook and stay up-to-date on standards for inclusive sex education here.
Look to see what your local and school district policies are. Are they inclusive of LGBTQ+ young people? Can you find ways to improve them? If policies are not inclusive of LGBTQ+ youth, rally up supporters and go to a district meeting to demand that sex education changes. You can find resources and fact sheets on SIECUS’ website.
You can also see if your state legislators are passing legislation that is anti-trans or anti-LGBTQ+ youth. If they are, you can call and push back on discriminatory policies. Work with
champions to introduce legislation that supports LGBTQ+ sex education.
Call your members of Congress and see if they are co-sponsoring two bills; the Real Education for Health Youth Act, which would mandate comprehensive sex education and de-fund abstinence-only at the federal level, and the Youth Access to Sexual Health Services Act, which would increase access support with intense focus on access to sex education for LGBTQ+ young people. The Congressional Switchboard is 202-224-3121.
Divest from police- and resource-officer presence in schools. Find out how much your school is funding resource officers, demand for the reduction or divestment in these officers, and reallocate those funds for mental health care, sexual education, and health trainings for teachers.
